It went to Earth Fire Alliance (EFA), a nonprofit that serves as the program's financial steward and governance hub, then contracted Muon Space to design, build, and operate the constellation. The funding breakdown, per public grant records: $26 million from the Bezos Earth Fund (described as the largest single philanthropic commitment to wildfire detection to date), $15.5 million from Google.org, $12.5 million from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (grant ID GBMF11986.01, approved July 2024), and a remaining $15.2 million from donors EFA has not publicly named. EFA then issued Muon Space a reported $42 million Phase I contract — whose full terms are not public.
That structure is meaningfully different from a VC-backed product launch. Muon Space has its own separate corporate funding — approximately $181 million across seed, Series A, and Series B rounds from investors including Activate Capital, Congruent Ventures, and Radical Ventures, with a Form D filed June 2022 (accession 0001932309-22-000001, SEC CIK 0001932309). The FireSat money is contract revenue from a nonprofit client. The two piles don't mix, and the press coverage hasn't been careful about that distinction.
The technology itself is a joint development: Muon Space built the multispectral infrared satellites — each described by EFA representatives as roughly dishwasher-sized, unfolding after deployment — while Google Research built the AI models for fire detection. The system is designed to spot fires as small as a two-car garage within one hour of ignition; full global coverage at 20-minute revisit intervals isn't projected until the early 2030s. CAL FIRE is a named early adopter through EFA's FireConnect program. No direct state or federal appropriations to the program have been identified.
Three satellites is a proof of concept, not a constellation. The path from this launch to EFA's stated 20-minute global coverage requires satellites, contracts, and operating budgets that haven't been announced. EFA has said FireSat data will be freely accessible, but the long-term funding model beyond the initial $69.2 million isn't public. That's the number worth watching — not the grant total already committed, but what replaces it when the first tranche runs out.
