We talked to 21 Muni riders — actual people, waiting at actual stops, presumably hoping their bus would actually show up — and only three of them knew about the potential cuts. That's a 14% awareness rate for what would be one of the most significant rollbacks to San Francisco's public transit system in recent memory.
The cuts aren't some fringe scenario cooked up by a disgruntled spreadsheet jockey at the SFMTA. They're the likely outcome if upcoming ballot measures fail to pass. San Francisco's transit agency is staring down a serious budget shortfall, and the fix, apparently, is hoping voters approve new revenue measures they haven't been told they need to vote on — for a crisis they don't know exists.
This is how the city operates. The people who run things assume someone else is doing the communicating. Nobody is. And then, when cuts happen, everyone acts shocked.
Let's be clear: there's a legitimate conversation to be had about whether Muni's budget problems stem from mismanagement, bloated overhead, and years of financial decisions that prioritized everything except actually running buses. That conversation is worth having. But it's almost impossible to have it when the riders most affected are completely in the dark.
If 20 lines get axed, this isn't an abstract policy problem. It's the 38-Geary not showing up. It's outer neighborhoods — already underserved — getting cut off further. It's low-income commuters losing the only transportation option they actually have.
Muni doesn't need to put out a press release. It needs to do the unsexy, unglamorous work of actually telling people what's at stake — at stops, on buses, in multiple languages — and letting San Franciscans decide if they want to fund it or fix it.
Right now, the agency is banking on voter ignorance. That's not a transit strategy. That's a trap.
