San Jose relocates Mexico-England World Cup watch party from San Pedro Square to Discovery Meadow and SAP Center for safety after Tuesday's violence.

San Jose is moving its official World Cup watch party for Sunday's Mexico vs. England match from San Pedro Square Market to Discovery Meadow and SAP Center, the city announced July 3.

The Mexico-England Round of 16 match kicks off Sunday, July 5 at 5 p.m. PT. Discovery Meadow (180 Woz Way) will show both the 1 p.m. Brazil-Norway match and the 5 p.m. Mexico-England match, while SAP Center will host Mexico-England only. Free tickets are required for Discovery Meadow entry and sold out quickly Friday.

The relocation comes after Tuesday's Mexico-Ecuador watch party drew more than 40,000 fans to San Pedro Square, with many turned away and two people stabbed in post-match violence. Mayor Matt Mahan cited safety concerns and the need for larger venues to accommodate expected crowds.

"Sometimes safety is a priority," David Mulvehill, owner of O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in San Pedro Square, told NBC Bay Area. "I will miss the atmosphere a lot. Those games were a lot of fun."

San Pedro Square bars and restaurants will remain open Sunday, but the official viewing setup moves downtown. The city's watch parties are scheduled to return to San Pedro Square on Monday for Team USA's Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Discovery Meadow is accessible via VTA light rail at the Convention Center station. SAP Center is located at 525 W. Santa Clara Street, near the SAP Center VTA station.
