Merola is San Francisco Opera's summer conservatory — a free, roughly 11-week apprenticeship that this year drew its 28 participants from more than 1,600 international applicants: 22 singers, five pianist-coaches and one stage director. The Grand Finale is the last thing they do together before scattering to the start of professional careers, and it's built as a showcase rather than a single opera — arias, ensembles and staged scenes stitched into one program. The repertoire is the tell on why this isn't a student recital. The night pulls from Mozart, Massenet, Puccini and Berlioz — the core these singers are auditioning their futures against — but also reaches into Terence Blanchard and Lerner and Loewe, which means you'll get grand-opera weight and a couple of turns you can actually hum on the way out. Because it's scenes and not a through-composed evening, the pacing moves; you're not committing to three hours of one plot.

What you're really buying is a first look. Merola's alumni roll runs deep into the field, and the finale is where the program puts every one of its singers in front of a paying house at full stakes. Some of these names turn up on main-stage casts a few seasons from now, and "I saw them at the Merola finale" is a better story than most things you'll do this weekend.

The insider math. The base ticket gets you the concert, full stop. Merola also sells an $85 add-on for a post-concert reception with the artists at the Wilsey Center for Opera, the opera house's side building — worth it if meeting the singers is the point, skippable if you just want the music. On getting there: this is a drive-and-park trap. Van Ness is torn up and street parking around the Civic Center is thin and slow after dark, so take BART to Civic Center and walk, or use the Performing Arts Garage on Grove Street rather than circling. Doors and the 7:30 start don't wait on you finding a spot.

If you've got two hours and $25, the move is the cheapest single ticket you can get, up in the balcony, for the pure showcase — no reception, no fuss. You'll hear a full class of singers swing for the fences on the War Memorial stage, which is exactly the room they've spent all summer trying to earn.
