While the rest of the internet was busy posting Baby Yoda memes and arguing about whether the prequels were actually good (they weren't, and that's a hill we'll die on), someone in the Presidio captured the spirit of the holiday the old-fashioned way — with a stunning photo that reminds us why this city, for all its dysfunction, is still one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
The Presidio remains one of San Francisco's crown jewels — 1,500 acres of green space, historic architecture, and sweeping views that no amount of city mismanagement has managed to ruin. It's a reminder that some of the best things in this city are the ones the Board of Supervisors hasn't gotten around to "improving" yet.
And frankly, in a week where we could talk about budget deficits, transit delays, or the latest harebrained scheme to spend your tax dollars, sometimes it's worth pausing to appreciate what we've got. The Presidio is a national park site that costs the city essentially nothing to maintain — the Presidio Trust handles that — and delivers enormous value to residents and visitors alike. If only every government entity operated with that kind of efficiency.
One SF resident couldn't resist the political layup, joking about the photo's subject: "Did you ask the mayor for permission before you took his picture?" We'll let you decide which Star Wars character that comparison implies.
Look, we spend most of our time here pointing out where San Francisco falls short. But the Presidio — free, open, gorgeous, and mercifully unbothered by bureaucratic meddling — is San Francisco at its best. No permits required, no $5 billion bond measure needed. Just nature, history, and the Force.
May the Fourth be with you, SF. You need it.
