A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck just north of San Leandro at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, shaking parts of the East Bay and the wider Bay Area, KRON4 reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter about 2.5 miles north of San Leandro, near the Oakland border. The reviewed event measured magnitude 4.09 and originated about 3.2 miles underground.

Initial USGS ShakeMap data estimated a maximum intensity of roughly IV on the Modified Mercalli scale near the epicenter — shaking that can be widely felt indoors and may rattle dishes, windows and doors. That intensity estimate is automatic and may change as more observations arrive.
