The Big Sur property once owned by Beat Generation icon Lawrence Ferlinghetti is on the market for $2 million, marking a substantial increase from its reported original purchase price, though the initial transaction remains unverified by public records.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s rugged 2.6-acre Big Sur property is now listed for sale by his son, Lorenzo Ferlinghetti, with an asking price of $2 million. The price represents a significant increase from the roughly $20,000 that the iconic City Lights bookseller and poet reportedly paid for the parcel decades ago, according to his son.

The property, located at 39350 Coast Road in Bixby Canyon, includes a Western saloon-style cabin, a meditation hut, and access to a residents-only path to the beach. Listing agent Alex Brant of Compass (DRE #01900460) is marketing the site, emphasizing its literary history and secluded nature. “There’s a chance that someone who loves literary history and wants to own a piece of it is willing to pay that and then build a really incredible house down there,” Brant told the SF Standard.

Lorenzo Ferlinghetti, who has been living in a trailer on the land, told the SF Standard he initially expected to retain the property after his father’s death in 2021. However, personal circumstances led to the decision to sell. He acknowledges the emotional pull: “It’s been in the family so long, and just the whole canyon itself is ingrained in my spirit, my soul, since I was a child.” He added, “I know once this place is gone, it’s gone. That’s why I’m trying to get a high price for it.”

While the current listing of $2 million is public, the reported $20,000 original purchase price has not been independently verified through public property records as of this report. The specific date of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s acquisition of this parcel also remains unconfirmed beyond his son’s account. Data on comparable sales for undeveloped or rustic coastal parcels in Big Sur is similarly thin, making a direct market comparison challenging. The listing is actively seeking a buyer who values the unique history and remote location over immediate turn-key luxury.
