Let me say the obvious part first, because I'm not going to pretend it away: Victor Wembanyama is the best player in this series and probably the best player on the planet right now. He's the Defensive Player of the Year, he's a 7-foot-4 eraser at the rim, and the Frost Bank crowd is going to be a problem for forty-eight minutes. That's the case for San Antonio, and it's a real one. I'm not here to tell you the favorite is fake.

I'm here to tell you the number is fake.

Look at how these two teams arrived. The Spurs are coming off a grinding seven-game Western Conference Finals against the defending-champion Thunder — a war that went the distance, drained the tank, and ended their long road back to the Finals for the first time since 2014. The Knicks? They swept Cleveland. They won 11 straight playoff games at one stretch with a point differential that ranks among the largest 11-game runs in postseason history. One team had to claw through a Game 7 four days ago. The other has been sitting at home, healthy, watching film.

There's a youth-and-nerves layer here too. San Antonio's core is young, this is a first-time Finals for Wemby and most of that roster, and Mitch Johnson is coaching his first Finals on the sideline. New York counters with Jalen Brunson — the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, a 26.9-PPG postseason, a guy who does not blink — plus Karl-Anthony Towns to make Wembanyama actually defend in space and OG Anunoby to throw at everybody. That's a battle-tested, switchable, elite-efficiency team getting nearly a touchdown.

Game 1s after a long, draining conference series have a way of being closer than the favorite's reputation suggests. I don't need the Knicks to win — though at +5 the live dog price is sitting right there if you want it. I need them to keep it inside a possession or two, which a team this good offensively absolutely can.

The risk I'm taking on, stated plainly: if Wemby goes for 35 and a dozen blocks and the building levitates, this gets ugly early and the points don't matter. That's the live downside. I'm betting the fatigue-and-efficiency edge is bigger than the market's Wemby tax.

The play: 1u on New York Knicks +5 (-110, BetOnline.ag). Several books still have the full 5 — take it over the 4.5 if you're shopping; that half-point is exactly the kind of margin that decides a Finals opener.

Line pulled this morning; numbers move, shop your book.
