Reddit users want the J-Pop Summit back, but city records show no 2026 revival plans.
The J-Pop Summit isn't coming back to San Francisco this summer — at least not officially.
A Reddit post calling for the festival's return has been gaining traction, but city records and event calendars show no permit application or scheduled dates for a 2026 revival. The festival, which ran from 2009 to 2017 in Japantown, was canceled in 2018 due to "unforeseen circumstances in regards to our festival venue" and hasn't been held since, according to a Change.org petition calling for its return.
San Francisco's 2026 Special Event Master Calendar doesn't list a J-Pop Summit permit, and the official J-Pop Summit website hasn't posted updates since 2020. The SUPERFROG Project, the 501(c)(3) non-profit that organized the festival, hasn't announced any revival plans.
While Japantown's Peace Plaza is undergoing a $34 million renovation with a planned 2026 reopening, there's no official connection to a J-Pop Summit return. Other Japanese cultural events are confirmed: Japan Week runs July 11-19, and the Nihonmachi Street Fair is set for August 1-2.
For now, fans looking for Japanese pop culture in San Francisco will have to settle for these existing events.
