Most weekends this season, Golden Gate Park is running multiple free events simultaneously — the trick is knowing which lawn to be on. The current lineup includes the Mango Party in the Park (free mangoes, DJs, Speedway Meadow), Lindy in the Park swing dance sessions (near 7th Avenue and Lincoln every Sunday, no partner required), the Sunday Roller Disco Party at the Skatin' Place near Fulton and 36th, a Free Art Chalk Party on Hippie Hill, the Golden Gate Park Band's free Symphony in the Park at the Spreckels Temple of Music bandshell, and Dub Mission's 30th Anniversary Reggae in the Park — that last one is the headliner of the bunch, marking three decades of the long-running dub and reggae night moving outdoors.
Dub Mission at 30 is the reason to make the trip even if you've done the park circuit before. The event draws a sound-system crowd that's different from the festival-tourist overlap you get at Hardly Strictly. Food options are typically vendor-light at these free events, so eat before or grab something on Irving Street before heading in. Take the N-Judah to 9th Avenue or the 5-Fulton to Crossover Drive — weekend parking inside the park is a known time sink, and the garages fill by noon. No age restriction on any of these events.
If you have two hours: Hit Hippie Hill for the chalk art or Lindy in the Park first (both need daylight), then walk east to the bandshell for whatever's on. Save Roller Disco for late afternoon when the skaters thin out.
