We came across a small but charming story this week — a visitor had booked a massage with her sister at a local spot in the Castro, only to discover the business couldn't accommodate her fragrance allergies. No unscented oil, no workaround. Plans: scrapped. But instead of sulking or heading home, she insisted her sister enjoy the appointment and spent the hour wandering the neighborhood solo.

And apparently? She had a great time.

It's a tiny anecdote, but it speaks to something worth appreciating about the Castro — and about what makes San Francisco's best neighborhoods actually work. The walkability. The character. The fact that there's enough going on at street level to turn an inconvenience into an unexpectedly good afternoon.

This is the kind of organic neighborhood vitality that no amount of city planning grants or "activation initiatives" can manufacture. It comes from small businesses with personality, sidewalks that feel safe enough to stroll, and a community identity strong enough to draw people in even when their original errand falls through.

At The Dissent, we spend a lot of time (rightly) hammering the city for its failures — the wasteful spending, the bureaucratic bloat, the policies that drive businesses out. But it's worth pausing to acknowledge what still works. The Castro remains one of SF's most walkable, vibrant corridors precisely because it has the thing every neighborhood needs: a critical mass of small businesses that give people a reason to linger.

No government program created that. Entrepreneurs and community did.

Here's hoping City Hall remembers that the next time it's tempted to regulate, tax, or "improve" the neighborhood into something less interesting than what it already is.
