The "Caltrain EMD F69 concept" is a historical experimental locomotive with no actual connection to Caltrain, which is fully committed to Stadler's electric fleet and zero-emission operations.
An "official EMD F69 concept" for Caltrain circulating on Reddit is a historical phantom with no connection to the agency's current fleet. The EMD F69PHAC was an experimental AC locomotive built in 1989 as a joint venture between Electro-Motive Diesel and Siemens—only two units were ever produced, and both remain stored out of service in Illinois, per Trains.com. Caltrain has no procurement contracts, board minutes, or public bids referencing EMD or an "F69" design from 2020 through 2024, according to agency documents.
The agency is fully committed to zero-emission operations. Caltrain accepted 18 seven-car Stadler electric multiple units by March 2026 as part of its $2.4 billion electrification project, with full electric service launching in September 2024. A $60.9 million battery-electric multiple unit pilot from Stadler is underway to extend zero-emission service to the non-electrified Gilroy extension. "Caltrain's goal is to replace all diesel locomotives with zero-emission vehicles in compliance with the California Air Resources Board In-Use Locomotive Regulation," states a March 2026 staff report.
Electro-Motive Diesel, a Caterpillar/Progress Rail subsidiary, manufactures diesel locomotives and has no active role with Caltrain in 2026. The confusion likely stems from the agency's transition away from diesel technology toward Stadler's electric fleet.
