Let's talk about what's actually going on here.
The Academy charges north of $40 per adult ticket. A family of four can easily spend $165 or more for what one local parent described as "2-3 hours of content." That same parent added, bluntly: "I took my kids once a few years ago and we've never been back." As one SF resident put it: "Surprising considering how expensive tickets are."
So here's the math that doesn't add up: sky-high ticket prices, a prime location in one of the wealthiest metro areas on the planet, and somehow the institution is running eight-figure deficits. The question no one in leadership seems eager to answer is where exactly all that money is going.
Predictably, it's 53 rank-and-file employees paying the price — not the executive team whose strategic decisions created the mess. As one local noted: "Seems they should fire their leadership team and replace them with their #2 instead of 53 lower level employees."
But zoom out a little and this story is about more than one museum's budget spreadsheet. San Francisco's broader affordability crisis is eating its own cultural institutions alive. Another resident connected the dots: "No new houses, no new families, fewer kids — school closure, museum closure, cultural activities wind down, small businesses struggle." That's not hyperbole. It's a diagnosis.
When a city prices out the families and working people who actually sustain institutions like the Academy, you don't get a thriving cultural hub. You get a beautiful building in a park that fewer and fewer people can afford to visit — until one day the institution itself can't afford to operate.
The Academy's leadership will frame these layoffs as painful but necessary fiscal responsibility. Fine. But fiscal responsibility starts at the top, and it starts long before the pink slips go out. Somewhere between the "grand architecture" renovation that hollowed out beloved exhibits and the ticket prices that rival Disneyland, someone made choices that led here.
Those people still have their jobs. Fifty-three others don't.
