The San Francisco Giants spent three decades earning a specific kind of civic franchise credibility, the kind built on being the LGBTQ+-friendliest organization in professional sports. Then four pitchers wrote Bible verses over their rainbow caps on June 12, and the front office chose silence. Six weeks later, the Giants are simultaneously the targets of a DOJ/EEOC inquiry engineered by Harmeet Dhillon (who says the team discriminated against the players' religious freedom) AND a formal rebuke from their own mayor AND a boycott threat from the coalition that bought season tickets because they thought this franchise was their franchise. The lesson isn't about the culture war. It's about the specific impossibility of corporate neutrality when your brand is already a politics — and why the Giants of all teams should have known that.
There is a very specific kind of trouble you can only get into if you were once genuinely beloved. The San Francisco Giants are in that trouble now.
For three decades the franchise built something that no other team in professional sports had built quite the same way: an explicit, institutional, years-long relationship with queer San Francisco. It started in 1994, when the team held "Until There's a Cure Day" — the first AIDS awareness event in the history of major American professional sports. It deepened through a generation of Pride Nights, community sponsorships, and the simple fact that the rainbow flag flew from the stadium's exterior on days when you couldn't find it anywhere else in the sports world. By 2021, Giants players were on the field in Pride uniforms. By 2026, the franchise had a special MLB exemption — carved out just for the Giants and the Dodgers — allowing them to put Pride logos on their caps when every other club had been told, in 2023, to keep special imagery off the uniform entirely.
That exemption was a measure of the relationship. It was also, it turns out, a measure of the distance they had to fall.
What happened June 12 is by now well-documented. Four of the five pitchers used in a 5-1 loss to the Cubs either wrote Genesis 9:12-16 in Sharpie directly over the rainbow logo on their Pride caps or declined the cap outright. The team went quiet. Manager Tony Vitello — a first-year MLB manager, a college coach from Tennessee transplanted into one of the most politically charged clubhouses in the country — offered the word freedom with a flatness that communicated everything: he was not going to choose a side. President of baseball operations Buster Posey, when reporters finally cornered him eleven days later, answered three straight questions about the incident by saying he wouldn't comment. That was the strategy: say nothing decisive, wait for the news cycle to move on, stay neutral in the middle of something that had no middle.
It produced one of the more remarkable political predicaments in the recent history of Bay Area sports.
On one side of the Giants right now: Harmeet Dhillon, the Trump administration's Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, who sent a letter to MLB commissioner Rob Manfred in June referring the Giants to the EEOC for investigation. The theory is religious discrimination — that the franchise compelled employees to engage in expressive conduct that violated their faith. Manfred, for his part, barely helped when he wrote back to Senator Josh Hawley acknowledging that the Giants had "failed to properly explain to players that wearing the caps was optional" and confirming that no player would ever be disciplined. The net effect of that letter: the organization looked both complicit in a communications failure and incapable of enforcing its own event policy, while the Trump administration got to hold up the confirmed opt-out as proof that the forced-participation framing had merit. The federal government is currently, formally, investigating whether the Giants created a hostile religious work environment for their own pitchers.
On the other side: Mayor Daniel Lurie, at the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club's annual breakfast on June 30, delivering what by his mild political standards amounted to a pointed message. "There is no San Francisco without the LGBTQ+ community," he said. The players "represent San Francisco when they put on that uniform." He didn't name names. He didn't have to. A coalition of LGBTQ+ organizations has issued an open letter demanding direct meetings with the franchise, warning that absent "substantive action" they may "change their relationship with the team" — the only polite way to say we're leaving in the language of institutional advocacy. SF Pride executive director Suzanne Ford called the organization's post-incident silence "deafening." The fans at Oracle Park booed Landen Roupp when he took the mound on June 25.
The Giants managed to get investigated by the federal government and scolded by their own city simultaneously. For a strategy built entirely around saying nothing, that is a genuinely difficult thing to achieve.
The thing about the silence strategy is that it only works if your organization doesn't already have a 32-year paper trail of explicit political commitment. Corporations with no stated values can plausibly claim neutrality when a controversy emerges. The Giants cannot. The exemption itself was political. The Pride uniform was political. "Until There's a Cure Day" in 1994 was political — in the most literal sense: the city was in the middle of a plague, the Giants were one of the few civic institutions willing to acknowledge it, and that meant something to the people who were watching members of their community die. Solomon Bates understood this. Bates — the quietly important figure in this story — came out publicly as gay in August 2022, the same month the Giants released him after four seasons in their system. He had been out to his teammates since 2019. He spoke up this summer when the controversy hit, noting that "a rainbow should not hurt your heart like that" and questioning whether the "locker room brotherhood" ever really included him. Meanwhile the team is playing baseball, more or less, somewhere near .500 during stretches and badly under it the rest of the time. A franchise losing ballgames can be tolerated. A franchise losing its identity is a different problem. The specific absurdity of being simultaneously investigated by Harmeet Dhillon and rebuked by Daniel Lurie is that it suggests the Giants have achieved something genuinely unusual: a course of inaction that satisfies nobody and protects nothing. The LGBTQ+ community that built a generation of loyalty to this franchise feels abandoned. The pitchers who opted out now have the federal government running cover for them, which is not the outcome the Giants neutrality strategy was designed to produce either. Manfred's letter to Hawley handed Josh Hawley a political win. The mayor's remarks at the Alice B. Toklas breakfast handed the left a symbolic flag to plant. The Giants, in the middle, got nothing. Not goodwill. Not legal protection. Not clarity. Not even a quiet news cycle.
This franchise has been worth loving in ways that are specific to San Francisco in ways that matter. The AIDS epidemic hit this city harder than almost anywhere in the country, and the Giants were there early, when it wasn't easy to be there. That history is real. The question, as the team plays out another lost season in the desert tonight and the legal and political machinery grinds around them, is whether the people who run it now understand what they were the custodians of — and whether they have any coherent idea of what they owe it.
"You represent San Francisco," the mayor said.
The Giants have been trying very hard, for six weeks now, not to represent anything. It's not working.
