If you've been holding off on that coastal drive because the road kept conspiring against you, the wait is over. California's most dramatic stretch of asphalt is accessible end-to-end, which means it's time to gas up, queue the playlist, and figure out where you're actually going to eat.

Here's the thing about Highway 1: the drive itself is the destination, but your stomach doesn't care about scenery. You need a plan.

Starting from the Bay Area, your first real stop worth making is around Carmel — grab coffee and something substantial before the road starts doing its thing. Once you're south of Carmel, services get sparse fast, and the last thing you want is to be hangry while navigating a two-lane cliff road with a Winnebago on your bumper.

In the heart of Big Sur, the classic stops remain the classics for a reason. Burgers, cold beer, and outdoor seating with views that would make a postcard jealous — the area's handful of roadside spots punch well above their weight. Cash is still king at more than a few of them, so plan accordingly.

Further south toward Cambria, the road mellows out and the dining options expand. This is where you slow down, actually park the car, and sit for a full meal without feeling like you're holding up traffic.

A few practical notes: weekends will be busy now that the word is out. Go on a Tuesday if you can. Cell service is genuinely terrible in stretches, so download your maps offline and maybe print a backup like it's 2003. And if you see an open parking spot at a viewpoint, take it — it won't be there when you circle back.
