PlayGround has been running its writers pool since 1994, which means this isn't a student showcase — the playwrights have been working with professional directors and dramaturgical feedback all season. The "best of" format means each piece already survived one public reading and a selection process, so the floor is higher than a typical festival slot. Expect five-to-ten short works per program, each under 20 minutes, staged simply. The ACT Rueff is a small black box, so there's no bad seat.

Practical tip: the Grant Ave entrance on the ACT side can be easy to miss — look for the marquee, not the big Geary Boulevard doors. Arrive 20 minutes early; the house is small and fills without a reservation system. Street parking on Geary is metered until 6pm on weekdays; evenings and weekends it opens up. Powell BART gets you there in under five minutes on foot.

If you've got two hours: catch whichever program runs closest to 7pm, then walk two blocks to grab food on Geary before the neighborhood quiets down.
