The California Historical Radio Society hosts its 22nd annual Radio Day by the Bay at Radio Central in Alameda on July 18 — and the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra may be playing its last set there.
Don Neely's Royal Society Jazz Orchestra has played Radio Day by the Bay enough times that the California Historical Radio Society is now billing this Saturday as a farewell. The CHRS event page for the 22nd annual edition notes that Neely's retirement is coming and asks regulars to catch the orchestra "this last time."
The day at 2152 Central Ave. in Alameda runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., free admission. CHRS operates the Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall of Fame out of the building; Radio Day is its annual open house — part festival, part living exhibit.
The outdoor program opens at 10 a.m. with hosts Hoyt Smith (Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame, 2016) and Sylvia Chacon (BARHOF 2023). Stan Bunger (BARHOF 2010) speaks at 10:10 on "San Francisco's Forgotten Broadcasters" — the story of the Tong family and Golden Star Radio, a Chinatown station that didn't make it into the standard broadcast histories. The RSJO takes the stage at 11. At 1 p.m., Dan Ashley of ABC 7 joins the Tamsen Donner Duo. At 1:30, the CHRS Radio Dog Players perform a live radio drama — staged with live sound effects — of Gangbusters: "The Alameda Planner." The Raccoon Hollow String Band closes at 2:30.
Ben Fong-Torres (BARHOF 2010) and Celeste Perry (BARHOF 2014) will announce the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame Class of 2025 during the event, along with the 2025 Legendary Station — radio KEEN — and the 2025 Don Sherwood Award recipient.
Inside Radio Central, museum tours run all day. An electronics surplus sale and the amateur radio station operating under callsign W6CF are open throughout.
"Radio Day celebrates more than a century of creativity and innovation," Executive Director Rachel Lee told the Alameda Post. "It's a rare opportunity to bring our community together — including radio fans, professionals, producers, and creators — to celebrate the preservation and future of broadcasting."
Radio Central opens at 8 a.m. Saturday, two hours earlier than its usual Wednesday–Saturday 10 a.m. schedule.
