Lisenia Rivera has worked the counter at La Mejor Bakery — 3329 24th Street, founded by Carmen Elias in 1993 and a Legacy Business since 2023 — long enough to start most orders before they're spoken. Mission Local reported her story; the neighborhood data fills in the corner around her.

By the time you walk through the door at 3329 24th Street near Bartlett, Lisenia Rivera may already have your order started. She has worked the counter at La Mejor Bakery for seventeen years, and by now she knows most of her regulars on sight — "Buenos dias," she says as someone walks in, then: "Lo mismo de siempre?" The same as always? The answer is usually understood before it's given.

"First of all, I'm the customer's friend," Rivera told Mission Local reporter Oscar Palma. "They've become attached to the affection — with respect, of course — that I give them."

The bakery itself predates Rivera by more than a decade. Carmen Elias founded La Mejor in 1993, according to the bakery's application for the San Francisco Legacy Business Registry, which approved the designation on February 27, 2023, under case number LBR-2022-23-028. In Palma's account, the five or so tables fill most mornings with older Latino residents reading El Tecolote or El Reportero; on the wall behind the counter, photos of the last three mayors pose with Elias, fogged over by steam from the coffee machine. Rivera was a regular customer here long before she ever worked here, Palma reported — she'd stop in on her way to BART — which means she has been part of this particular corner, in one capacity or another, for longer than the seventeen years she has been behind the counter.

The 24th Street block shows no recent construction permits in the city's building database. The Mission around it registers differently: 41 eviction notices filed in the last 90 days, with filings at the 1300 block of Hampshire Street on July 21 and the 2300 block of Mission Street on July 20 among the most recent, and 2,279 311 service requests logged across the neighborhood in the past seven days.

La Mejor sits mostly outside that data. In Palma's telling, a man in a cowboy hat passes outside on the sidewalk; someone comes in unsteady on his feet and Rivera sets down a cup of coffee in front of him before he asks. The tables stay occupied. The conchas keep coming out of the kitchen.
