On the stretch of Divisadero where the street settles into NoPa, the storefront at 311 has been dark for a little over a year, its windows papered while the block carried on around it — the 24 bus hissing to its stop, the coffee line at the corner, the foot traffic that Sharon Ardiana spent fifteen years feeding.
Ardiana's pizzeria, Ragazza, served its last Neapolitan pie there on March 31, 2025. She opened it in 2010, three years after her Glen Park pizzeria Gialina, and ran it through a stretch that turned, somewhere in the middle, from packed to precarious. "I wanted it to be this place [where] people could find community," she told the trade magazine PMQ when she announced the closing. "I built it, and they came. And then there was a pandemic, and they stopped coming." She described Friday-night sales running two thousand dollars short of what they'd been, a shrinking neighborhood customer base, and a lease coming up for renewal that no longer penciled out — even with a landlord, she said, who wanted her to stay.
The space has a longer memory than Ragazza. Before the pizza oven went in, the storefront — tied to the family-run Metro Hotel that has occupied this corner of Divisadero since 1985 — held Metro Cafe and then Metro Kathmandu. Restaurants here have a way of handing the keys down.
The next tenant is Esme, the first solo project from Susan Dunn, who has cooked at Pizzetta 211 and co-owns Pearl 6101 out in the Richmond. She's leaving the Cal-Italian register behind for a French neighborhood bistro — steak frites, pâté, burgundy leather sourced from a Mission upholsterer, the menu's promise read off the SF Standard's spring openings list. The name, Dunn has said, means "beloved." Esme is slated to open this spring.
Walk past 311 now and the paper is coming off the glass. The pizza oven is somebody else's problem; the leather banquettes are going in. The sign over the door will read a word that someone chose on purpose, on a block that has watched the dinner crowd change hands more than once.
