The Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California recorded nearly 6,000 patient visits in 2025 — its highest since opening in September 2008 — at a state-licensed free clinic near Lake Merritt. A mobile dental service is coming soon.

At 2121 Harrison St., Suite 120 in Oakland — a block from Lake Merritt, on the grounds of the Cathedral of Christ the Light — a clinic the state licenses as a "Free Clinic" turned in its busiest year on record in 2025: nearly 6,000 patient visits, and not a single bill sent.

The Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California has operated at that address since it opened in September 2008. California's Department of Health Care Access and Information lists it as active under Facility ID 306014245. Since its founding, the clinic says it has logged more than 62,000 total visits — figures drawn from clinic records, not independently audited. There are no fees, no sliding scale, no payment system at all.

The operation runs almost entirely on volunteers: more than 65 physicians, nurses, and specialists covering 14 fields — cardiology, psychiatry, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, urology, and more — alongside primary care. The clinic's most recent IRS 990 (FY 2024, EIN 20-5969389) shows revenue of roughly $1.97 million, expenses of $1.34 million, and net assets of $4.86 million; funding comes through philanthropic gifts and grants with partners including Sutter Health, Stanford Medicine, and John Muir Health. A mobile dental service is in the works, with twice-monthly appointments expected soon.

The clinic accepts patients without insurance regardless of immigration status and draws from across the Bay Area — including, per its own count, more than 80 Northern California cities. It cites an estimated 400,000 uninsured residents across the nine-county region as the pressure driving the record volume.
