A grassroots nickname for the East Bay suburb of roughly 70,000 traveled from an October 2025 Reddit thread to $35 hats to the mayor's own dais, where the City Council heard it named at an Aug. 18 meeting.
Mayor Kevin Wilk was sure his town went by "The Creek." Then he started seeing something else — on hats, on shirts, in the mouths of people downtown. "I'm seeing more and more 'The Nut,'" he said, in remarks to KRON4 (external source, opens in a new tab). For as long as most residents can name, the East Bay city of roughly 70,000 has answered to "The Creek," the "Dub C," or plain "W.C." Increasingly, it answers to "The Nut."
The name did not surface out of nowhere. An October 2025 Reddit thread inviting locals to nickname Walnut Creek and its neighbors turned up "The Nut" among the most popular answers, one poster claiming to have used it since moving to town in 2020, per KRON4's report. That was a message-board in-joke. What moved it onto people's heads was retail: a local newsletter and social account, Walnut Creek Spotlight, put "The Nut" on hats and began selling them for $35 apiece.
The seller did not expect it to travel. "I didn't think people would actually want this," the entrepreneur behind the hats told SFGATE's Jessica Yadegaran, describing a scramble to keep up with orders — handoffs at the Jamba Juice, at the Black Bear Diner, at buyers' front doors. By this summer the merch had a booth of its own, selling hats and T-shirts at the 2026 Locust Street Festival downtown.
Then the institution caught up to the meme. At the City Council's Aug. 18 meeting, Wilk told the dais the nickname was turning up all over the city lately, and gave a public shout-out to the resident selling the hats — the moment a piece of internet shorthand becomes something a mayor names into the record. Coverage sped the loop further: SFGATE noted that a KRON4 segment on the nickname, reshared on Instagram, had cleared 1.6 million views and better than 94,000 likes within days.
There is a generational seam under all of it. The nickname reads as a younger crowd's coinage, and the friction comes from the "Creek" faithful — Wilk among them, at least at first. He has come around to treating the attention as its own reward, saying what matters is that people are talking about Walnut Creek at all — "whatever they want to call it, great." Not everyone is so easygoing. As a syndicated account of the backlash (external source, opens in a new tab) documented, reactions have split, with at least one resident vowing to keep saying Walnut Creek.
Whether "The Nut" outlasts the news cycle that carried it is the open question. The tell will be on the sidewalk, not the dais: a $35 hat on a stranger's head, seen often enough that even the holdouts stop reaching for "The Creek."
